- Sisters of Mercy were the first organization to create a statewide healthcare presence – 100 years ago
- A segment of Mercy hospitals created the first modern statewide healthcare system – from Sioux City to Clinton – in 1976: Sisters of Mercy Health Corp. (now Trinity Health – Novi, MI)
- Mercy Hospitals were the first in Iowa to provide management services to smaller community hospitals (1978)
- Mercy Hospitals were the first to own physician clinics (1985)
- In 1996 Catholic Health Initiatives, a large national system, was created and included ownership of two Iowa Mercys
- In 1998, the two national systems developed MHN to jointly operate their organizations in Iowa
